Retrospective Cycles are a UK specialist in used Italian classic racing bikes. For over 15 years they have been working in Italy, locating and restoring vintage scooters and in 2010 expanded into sourcing Italian racing cycles.
Each month they import bikes that have been handpicked by their own experts who travel to Italy to personally inspect and pick the cream of the steel framed classic racing bike stock. Only ready-to-ride, classic road bikes in original condition are selected – "Our bikes are not restored – they are cherished, loved and have been carefully looked after".
This book is a result of the ongoing collaboration between Retrospective Cycles' owner, Niall McCart and photographer, Paul Hart (vespamore photography). A regular Retrospective customer since 2002, Paul often visits and photographs the scooters and scenery at Retrospective and always shoots on his favoured medium of 35mm film; preferring its greater tonal range and depth of field to digital photography. Following the success of their 2013 Retrospective Scooters book, Niall and Paul agreed to embark on a similar project centred on the vintage cycles.
RETROSPECTIVE CYCLES begins with shots Paul has taken of Niall's bikes at his North London premises, Clerkenwell’s ‘Look Mum No Hands’ cycling café and Broadway Market in Hackney. Every image has been shot on 35mm film, between November 2010 and February 2014. Following this is a visual account of their trip to the classic Italian cycling event, L'Eroica in October 2013. As well as riding images in the Chianti countryside along Tuscany's 'Bianche Strade', Paul has endeavoured to capture the atmosphere and passion of L’Eroica, with additional shots taken of the many cycle traders present throughout the weekend in the small town of Gaiole in Chianti.
Paul displays a strong connection with his subject matter; constantly inspired by the detailing and engineering of these beautiful machines and with an eye for composition, he has provided a visual feast for vintage cycling enthusiasts.
Niall and Paul hope you enjoy this book as much as they enjoyed making it.
